A split over the milk
Article Abstract:
Crohn's disease, which most commonly affects the small intestine and colon and causes severe pain, bleeding, diarrhoea and weight loss, is caused by an organism known as Mycobacterium paratuberculosis (M paraTB), according to John Hermon-Taylor, professor of surgery at St George's Hospital in London, England. He believes that M paraTB is transmitted from infected animals into their milk, and is then ingested by humans. However, there is still considerable debate among medical experts about the causes of Crohn's disease and its treatment.

The old house that holds the blueprint of life
Article Abstract:
The Genome Campus outside Cambridge, England, aims to decipher the 100,000 genes that make up human life. Its researchers hope to eventually be able to eradicate inherited genetically based diseases. This laboratory will be responsible for one-third of the genome, with this possibly rising to a half. The researchers have a very strong sense of purpose, and work closely together, with no competition or hierarchy. Most staff are highly qualified, and there is a research programme for PhD students.

It's up, down and sideways
Article Abstract:
The Open University Geological Society's 1999 Hawaiian Islands field trip had 35 participants. They travelled to both Oahu and Hawaii (Big Island), and visited locations including Kilauea, the smallest and youngest of the Hawaiian volcanoes, Mount Ulu and the Pu'u O'o lava fields. At the base of the Koolau Shield on Oahu, they descended into the Kappa quarry to view a collection of dykes formed around 2km below the original summit.
