A thousand summers revealed in the trees
Article Abstract:
The 1990s have been hotter than any period in the last 1,000 years, with 1998 having been the warmest year of all, according to research undertaken at the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, England. Researchers have been able to obtain detailed information about climate patterns by examining the growth rings found inside ancient trees and the snowfall and melt rings seen when a core is taken deep into ancient ice. There are uncertainties about the earlier part of the record up to around 1500, but later information is regarded as extremely accurate.

St Kilda at 'high risk' from oilfields
Article Abstract:
The International Union for the Conservation of Nature has warned that the development of the new Atlantic frontier oilfield could create serious environmental problems on the island of St Kilda. This island is the leading seabird breeding station in the North Atlantic, and has possibly 1 million birds. It also has very important wild flowers and plants, along with its own subspecies of wren, mouse and sheep. There are fears that oil spills could reach the island, having a catastrophic impact.
