A treaty past its sell-by date
Article Abstract:
The Franco-German belief in federalism which enlivened the aims of the Maastricht treaty has changed since the French realised they would not be the controlling influence in a federated Europe. Debates on the treaty have divided member states internally and from each other. In the UK this debate is threatening the foundation of parliamentary democracy. Voters cannot tell what the aims of the Conservative Party are. UK Prime Minister John Major could have chosen not to sign the treaty, but felt this would isolate the country.

Infotainment is no laughing matter
Article Abstract:
The late 20th century concepts of infotainment and pornotopia, identified in the US, have several elements in common. They both extend the realm of fantasy and limit people's ability to think. As people become accustomed to infotainment, which blurs the distinction between entertainment and information, they will also become more open to pornotopia, in which time becomes sexual time and nature has no separate existence. Against this background, some observers fear that the 21st century may become a new Dark Age.

There will be no Nuremberg here
Article Abstract:
The UN Security Council war crimes tribunal for crimes in former Yugoslavia is the first international tribunal since the Nuremberg and Tokyo war crimes trials. In those cases the war had been won and ended. The tribunals were set up by the victors. This tribunal was set up by those who did not fight in the former Yugoslavia, do not occupy territory or have any prisoners. The Americans and Russians have different aims from this tribunal.
