A weakness at the heart of the German solution
Article Abstract:
The image of Deutsche Bank has been severely damaged recently as a result of problems with companies in which it is involved as a shareholder, lender or both. Most recently, engineering concern Klockner-Humboldt-Deutz, in which Deutsche Bank holds a 48% stake, has reported very large losses and its top managers are under investigation for alleged fraud and embezzlement. Problems with the management of Daimler-Benz, which made losses of 5.7 billion German marks in 1995, have most damaged Deutsche Bank.

An end to 'boom and bust' is the vital business ingredient
Article Abstract:
The strong peaks and troughs in the economic cycle in the UK over recent years have had a very negative impact on small businesses. Many expanded to meet demand during a period of economic growth, and were then hit by falling orders when the economy entered a period of recession. The unpredictable nature of the economy has encouraged entrepreneurs to focus on property, instead of services and manufacturing, and has badly affected investment and growth.
