A whiff of history at Westminster
Article Abstract:
The UK Conservative party is in danger of splitting apart completely over the issue of a single European currency. Eurosceptics have been able to push prime minister John Major a considerable way in their direction, but he is determined to keep the UK's options open on sterling entering a single currency after 1999. By taking this stance, he is regarded as aligning himself with deputy prime minister Michael Heseltine and chancellor Kenneth Clarke. Going any further would bring the risk of destroying the party.

Is there a Tory future?
Article Abstract:
Some observers believe that former UK Prime Minister John Major acted extremely selfishly by deciding to resign the leadership of the Conservative party at a time when it is in disarray. He owes his political career to the Conservative party, but now seems to have abandoned it. The party is now divided and directionless. Others see a more positive future for the party, as long as it gives a high priority to drawing up a philosophy for opposition.
