Abortion: why we must think again
Article Abstract:
Some 184,000 abortions take place each year in the UK, where abortion is virtually offered on demand, as 98% are for social reasons, though this was not the intention of Parliament. There is medical evidence which shows that foetuses suffer pain when aborted. Additionally there are increasingly more reasons for people wishing to abort, with so much information becoming available about foetuses. Genetic tests and prenatal tests are expected to become more common in the ten years up to 2006, which will increase the incidence of abortion.

Vicars: who on earth needs them?
Article Abstract:
The image of the Church of England vicar is unrealistic for most people in 1993 as only 10% of the UK population attends church. Churches are still significant on occasions of grief or joy. Catholic church attendance has also fallen, from 1.6 million in 1975 to 1.3 million in 1989. The job of parish priest has become lonely as society accepts neutrality and priests no longer embody a communal faith. The advent of women priests augments the social role of counselling and caring and diminishes the sacramental role.

Freud with a human face
Article Abstract:
Freud's basic principle of the effectiveness of talking in allowing people to improve themselves is being challenged by psychoanalyst Adam Phillips. He believes that the Freudian ideal is valid, but he redefines it as a way of sustaining the life-giving stories which people tell themselves, and does not see it as a way of curing people. He has written several books which aim to humanise the Freudian legacy, and all his work is focused on helping people to talk.
