On borrowed time in Libraryland
Article Abstract:
The UK's public libraries have failed to modernise over recent years, having suffered from underfunding. They have not adapted to the changes introduced by the information superhighway, and have failed to take account of the new emphasis among most businesses on customer service. Library buildings are in a poor state of repair, staff are often untrained and opening hours are limited. However, there are a number of large central libraries which have received sufficient funding, and they show that the image of libraries can be greatly improved if they offer a wide range of services in attractive buildings.

The hero with 5,000 passionate lovers
Article Abstract:
The 11 novels which make up Winston Graham's Poldark saga, telling of life in 17th century Cornwall, have been popular, especially since the early novels were adapted for television by the BBC in 1975-1977. However, there is now concern among Poldark fans that HTV is planning a new adaptation which will not include Angharad Rees and Robin Ellis, the two stars of the original BBC series. Fans feel that this approach will prove to be a great mistake for HTV.

Book lovers fear for the future of Libraryland
Article Abstract:
Readers and librarians take action against councils who cut library services. From 1989-93 72 public libraries in England closed and many suffered reductions in the book fund or opening hours. Over half the population, 33 million, are registered as library members. In 1975 229 libraries were open more than 60 hours a week. This went down to 18 in 1990, limiting accessibility. The Independent conducted a survey of cuts for 1993.
