Adverts tempt and taunt old comrades
Article Abstract:
The Russian advertising industry has grown dramatically over recent years, and its turnover has now reached around $1.2 billion. However, many Russians remain suspicious and resentful about commercial advertising. This is particularly true of poor people, who dislike being reminded about products they cannot afford to buy. Advertisers tend to target young people, who have a larger disposable income than the elderly, and this means that advertisements are sometimes too explicit in the eyes of other population groups.

Reprieved from Russia's death row
Article Abstract:
Police investigations of the murders of Anya and Olesya Gavrilenko, aged 11 and nine, in Archangel, Russia, in Sep 1993 have attracted considerable controversy. The girls' uncle, Mikhail Yurochko, was initially arrested, and he subsequently implicated two friends. Yurochko and one of the friends were sentenced to death, while the other friend was jailed for 15 years. Following extensive campaigning, all three men were eventually released, but they have received no apology from the authorities.

Murder in the ranks: soldiers killed by their own comrades
Article Abstract:
It is becoming apparent that large numbers of conscripts in the Russian army are murdered each year by colleagues. However, it is almost impossible for relatives of the victims to establish what really happened, and army authorities are simply able to dismiss the deaths as accidents. Relatives are particularly concerned about the fact that suspicious deaths in the army are investigated by a military prosecutor, rather than a civil one. This makes it easy to cover up what really happened.
