Saddam's last-ditch plea to West
Article Abstract:
Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has stated that he is seeking an end to sanctions, rather than attempting to spark off a conflict with the United Nations. Western leaders continue to take a firm stand against Iraq, but President Bill Clinton has emphasized that US and UK air strikes could be avoided if Iraq permits United Nations weapons inspectors to complete their mission. It is believed that France, Russia and China may be seeking to clarify an offer made to Iraq in Oct 1998 to revise the procedures for certifying that all weapons of mass destruction have been eliminated.

China's fury fails to kill peace plan
Article Abstract:
It appears that the diplomatic crisis sparked off by the Nato bomb attack on the Chinese embassy in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, may be less damaging than originally anticipated. Extensive efforts are being made to placate China, and diplomats are working hard to ensure that the outline agreement for a peace settlement obtained by the foreign ministers of the leading Western countries and Russia is not endangered. It is regarded as a positive sign that China has not stated that it is considering direct diplomatic retaliation with regard to Kosovo, Yugoslavia.
