After wet summer, Britain heads for a winter drought
Article Abstract:
The UK saw above-average rainfall in May, Jun and Aug 1997, but there is still a danger of drought in some parts of the country in summer 1998 if winter rainfall does not reach at least 75% of normal levels. Most water companies are reporting that their reservoirs are fuller than normal for the time of year, but problems may be sparked off as a result of below-average rainfall in Sep and Oct 1997. All but one of the 35 'indicator' rivers measured by the Environment Agency is flowing at below average levels for the time of year.

It's a rainier than average February; so why are the water companies talking again about crisis?
Article Abstract:
Reducing mains leakage and encouraging people to use less water will no longer be sufficient to deal with water shortages in the UK, according to the Water Companies' Association. Demand continues to rise, and supply problems are also being created by climate change. The water companies claim that it will be necessary to cut off water supplies for several hours a day and that water will no longer be available for washing cars or watering gardens. However, some observers are expressing scepticism about these claims.

Why we are too wet about water
Article Abstract:
The UK Environment Agency and Ofwat are keen for water companies to focus on restricting the growth in demand for water. This approach must now be given priority over increasing water supply. It is clear that water use cannot be allowed to rise indefinitely, as this can cause serious damage to wildlife. Water companies do not share this view, and are calling for a mixture of demand management and investment in expanding supplies.
