Summit hopes for peace breakthrough
Article Abstract:
The success of the peace process in Northern Ireland will depend to a considerable extent on the outcome of a summit meeting between John Major and Irish Taoiseach John Bruton, planned to take place in Sep 1995. There had been concern that the peace process was being endangered by the republican view that the British government was not taking any positive action, but it now seems that the initiative will be placed back on course. It is possible that the British government will agree to an increase in remission for republican prisoners from one-third to one-half.

Shankill drives a road to peace across old battlefields
Article Abstract:
Loyalist groups in Northern Ireland are now taking a less extreme line, according to former loyalist terrorist Billy Hutchinson. They realise that it is important to convince Sinn Fein that a democratic process is now underway and that Sinn Fein has a vital role to play in this as a democratic party. Many observers have expressed surprise and relief that loyalists are now expressing such moderate views.

Thorns in the side of peace
Article Abstract:
The peace process in Northern Ireland, which has been in force since mid-1994, is now showing possible early signs of breaking down. Many people cannot imagine a return to full-scale violence, but both loyalists and republicans are still prepared to hold demonstrations which may lead to trouble. Negotiations will have to be handled extremely sensitively if they are to prove successful.
