America - the gentle giant?
Article Abstract:
The US economy has expanded rapidly in the 1990s, and the US has established a dominant position internationally. However, it is not so completely dominant as it sometimes appears. Within the US, companies are strongly aware that a foreign company can pose significant competition if they do not remain vigilant. The US dominates the world's media. but there are corporate challengers, especially from Germany. It is important to remember that US domination is better than most alternatives, such as domination by China.

Trade frictions may rub Euroland the wrong way
Article Abstract:
It is quite possible that trade relations between the US and Europe will become as tense as those between Japan and the US. The US will not be able to support the rest of the world for much longer, but it is very difficult to predict how and when the economic boom in the US will come to an end. Both Europe and Japan will have to boost domestic demand if they are not to be severely affected by the economic downturn that will eventually emerge in the US.

It is possible that there will be problems as the US makes the macroeconomic shift to slower growth.
