An academic harvest for the world
Article Abstract:
Research is being undertaken into a very wide range of subjects in areas including agriculture, engineering, technology and sociology. Most ordinary people are aware of significant advances in medical research, but are not aware that the work of researchers is also benefiting humanity in many other ways. Researchers in the department of mechanical engineering at Southampton University, England, for example, have developed equipment able to identify different plastics for recycling. Research at Leeds University, England, is investigating what makes soft matter hold together.

Body's pain relief mimics cannabis
Article Abstract:
Recent research at the University of Naples has suggested that pain can be controlled by a reaction between two chemicals in the body - called anadamide and PEA - which have a similar effect to cannabis. The chemicals are spurred into action when cells are damaged and this research could lead to the discovery of new types of anaesthetic. In the UK scientists have been given permission by the government to do research into the painkilling effects of cannabis.

Joining the single currency could boost R and D
Article Abstract:
Companies in the United Kingdom appear to invest too little in research and other areas, and they have the problem of higher costs of funds. This leads to short-termism. Costs are higher than Japan and Germany, and less research is carried out. One way of tackling this problem would be for the United Kingdom to join European monetary union (Emu). United Kingdom costs of funds could then be cut, and the problem of a focus on the short-term could be tackled.
