An embrace from the minister
Article Abstract:
The UK Arts Minister Tim Renton has announced that the government will directly fund the arts. The National Theatre, Royal Shakespeare Company, Royal Opera House and English National Opera will be promoted as centres of excellence. This is opposed by the Arts Council who fear abolition. The Arts Council was set up after World War II to distribute government funding to the arts to avoid political intervention and interference. The Arts Council claims that direct government funding will create a monopoly system and cause censorship.

High-risk culture for the Nineties
Article Abstract:
Until recent years, the Edinburgh Festival itself has tended to be overshadowed by the Fringe, various semi-anarchic modern drama and stand-up comedy events. There were some very high quality performances as part of the festival proper, but these were never really at the cutting edge. However, this has changed under Brian McMaster, who became director of the Edinburgh Festival in 1992. He has greatly boosted the festival's reputation in some areas, including dance, and the festival has achieved a 30% rise in earned income.
