Another small step for Mir, and a giant gamble for Nasa
Article Abstract:
Nasa has tried hard to deflect attention from the considerable risks associated with its decision to send a US astronaut on a four-month mission aboard the Russian spacecraft Mir. It believes that the US government should show that it has courage for high technology projects. In contrast, opponents of this project believe that it is too dangerous, especially as it will not contribute to human knowledge. Astronaut James Lovell shares this view, stating that all information that can possibly be obtained in this way has already been obtained.

Cynicism wins by a huge consensus
Article Abstract:
Most Americans are now extremely cynical about politicians, and were therefore not prepared to accept Republican presidential candidate Bob Dole's assertion that he was a man of character and honesty. Many people chose to vote for president Bill Clinton simply because the economy is performing well and they saw no reason to replace him with Bob Dole, rather than because they actually respect or trust him. Ordinary people are equally dissatisfied with Republicans and Democrats, and this has brought about a stalemate.
