Antonia Butler
Article Abstract:
Cellist Antonia Butler became closely associated with music at a very early age. She began learning the cello at the age of 10, and from the age of 13 studied for four years with Julius Klengel at the Conservatoire in Leipzig, Germany. She studied for a further three years with Diran Alexanian at the Ecole Normale in Paris, France, and received a number of solo engagements following her debut recital in London, England, in 1930. In later life, she developed a very successful teaching career.

The Trans-Siberian Railway, which is celebrating its centenary, continues to play a key role in connecting remote communities in Russia. This railway covers vast distances, and passengers can often experience boredom. However, considerable interest can also be derived from lengthy conversations with fellow passengers. Foreigners should try to learn a few Russian words and phrases before travelling, and should be prepared for extremes of temperature.

Eva Heinitz

Cellist and viola da gamba player Eva Heinitz was born in Berlin, Germany, in 1907. She was admitted to the Berlin State Academy of Music at the age of 15, and began appearing as a soloist in her early 20s.
