The heart of the Appalachian Trail, which runs for 2,500 miles, is the Shenandoah National Park, which has a wide range of attractions. Here, the Appalachian Trail follows the Skyline Drive along the ridge of the Appalachian Mountains. The trees are marked to indicate the route, but progress can be quite slow because the terrain is challenging in places. There are many small towns along the route where visitors can gain an insight into the traditional American lifestyle.
