Are our PhDs safe in the laboratory?
Article Abstract:
There is growing concern among academics in the UK that the increasing cost of university education will deter talented graduates from studying for a PhD. Some observers fear that the UK could lose its position as a pioneer of scientific and technological research as a result. They feel that the science base as a whole will be weakened if it is not possible to encourage the best graduates from going into research. The lack of funding for laboratory and research support is also a potential danger to research at UK universities.

Why the great outdoors may be the education of a lifetime
Article Abstract:
There are considerable variations between universities in Wales and the south-west of England. However, many share the advantage of being located close to both the sea and beautiful countryside. The University of Exeter, England, for example, has more than 8,000 full-time students and almost 2,500 part-time students. It has three main sites. In contrast, Lampeter, the oldest university college in Wales, has only around 1,800 under- and postgraduates.
