Are our degrees working?
Article Abstract:
UK government ministers believe that universities should teach students the skills that will make them attractive to potential employers, such as communicating and working with others. This view is shared by the Committee of vice-chancellors and principals. However, some academics do not believe that it is their job to teach students these skills, while others feel that teaching these skills goes against the pursuit of truth, which they regard as the purpose of higher education.

Never mind the fees, feel the quality
Article Abstract:
It is widely believed in the UK that universities will eventually begin breaking away from the flat-rate tuition fee system. At present, students pay the same fees, regardless of the real costs of their course and the reputation of the university they are attending. So far, the government has ruled out the possibility of some universities making additional charges, but this is not expected to continue after Education Secretary David Blunkett moves to another post.
