Armed with a rifle and licence to cull
Article Abstract:
A managed system where wildlife is given a value that may be realised by the native and controlled use of the bush would protect endangered species. Rhinoceros are usually shot with a small-calibre rifle in the foot and left paralysed and in pain to die a slow death while the poacher axes off the horn which earns him 30 pounds sterling. Numbers have reduced from hundreds of thousands to 10,000 in a generation. A legally shot rhino could yield 50,000 pounds sterling, which could increase conservation investment.
