Army deserter tells of faking Chechen attack on Russian outpost

Evidence from Mehak Melkonian, a deserter from the Russian army, confirms claims by Chechens that the Russian army fakes Chechen attacks on its own positions. Russian officers are able to gain promotion and additional pay if they can claim to be fighting off rebel attacks.

Chechens trapped as Russians cut off escape
Article Abstract:
Many people are trying to leave Chechnya as Russian troops advance. However, a Russian checkpoint has been set up on the last road out of Chechnya, making it impossible for refugees to flee. Russian advance units are now eight miles from Grozny, the Chechen capital, but it is not yet known whether they will assault the city. President Ruslan Aushev of Ingushetia has called for Russia to reopen the corridor for refugees.
