Arrest of black lecturer heightens distrust
Article Abstract:
The recent case of university lecturer Michael Leary, who was arrested by plain-clothed police officers in Brixton, south London, after waiting for some time outside a restaurant for a friend, seems to reflect the poor treatment of black people by the police in the area. He was not allowed to explain why he had been hanging around on the pavement, and was treated as a criminal, even though there was no evidence that he had been involved in anything illegal. He believes that he was targeted simply because he was black.

Nigerian crime poses serious threat in Britain
Article Abstract:
The UK's National Criminal Intelligence Service is to take firmer action against fraud and drug-dealing by West African gangs. These crimes, mainly undertaken by Nigerians, are believed to create extremely large costs for the UK, with fraud alone costing 3.5 billion pounds sterling a year. The gangs form networks to siphon money, and it has proved very difficult to hamper their activities. With Nigerian crime gangs, there is the additional problem of a complicated language which is hard to translate.

Trainspotting: the reality
Article Abstract:
Drug abuse is now widespread in the UK, with London alone seeing more than 30 million drug deals a year, according to a report from the Home Office. A secret network of contacts supplies drugs, sleeping tablets and prescribed medicines, and there are incidents of private doctors accepting bribes to prescribe large volumes of drugs to addicts. Drug abuse is now becoming out of control in many of the UK's cities, with dealers taking extreme measures to protect themselves from the police.
