Asda bites back in prices battle
Article Abstract:
Asda, the UK supermarket, is heading for another skirmish in the high-priced consumer goods war, with the announcement it is to sell a premium dog food, Eukanuba, at prices up to GB 1.60 lower than specialist pet shops. In addition, it is to launch its own gourmet dog food, called Asda Hero Nutrition Plan, at prices claimed to be 30% below those of its rivals. According to Asda, the manufacturer Iams did not want the products sold in a supermarket and refused to supply them. In two days time a landmark European Court ruling will be made, concerning sourcing of so-called grey-market goods. Retailers could find it highly difficult to obtain grey market supplies, should the EU rule against the practice.
