Ashdown finds reason to forge a strange alliance
Article Abstract:
UK Liberal Democrat leader Paddy Ashdown seems to believe that he can have considerable political influence, even though the Labour party has a very large majority. He is determined to make Liberal Democrats aware of the benefits of forging closer links with the Labour party, and will look to exploit any benefits his party has. At present, Prime Minister Tony Blair has no need to establish links with the Liberal Democrats, but Ashdown is calculating that Blair may be taking a long-term view.

'I don't think the phone will ring.' (Liberal Democrat leader looks to eventually being part of a coalition government)
Article Abstract:
Leader of the Social Democrats Paddy Ashdown has made it absolutely clear that his non-negotiable requirement to enter into a coalition government is that the other party agrees to introduce legislation for proportional representation as quickly as possible. He feels most of the UK's problems over the last 40 years have been due to the ruling party being able to inflict its wishes on the people. This has affected education, health and all the other important areas of life.

Honest Paddy must tread carefully
Article Abstract:
The Liberal Democrats have distinguished themselves from the UK Conservative and Labour parties by being prepared to state clearly their views on sensitive issues such as the environment and monetary union. Party leader Paddy Ashdown has portrayed himself as honest and brave enough to challenge widely-held assumptions about voters' views. However, it must be remembered that he is still holding back on a number of issues, including how the party can obtain power.
