Assault and battery
Article Abstract:
The European Parliament is to vote on Jan 28, 1999, on a European Commission proposal to improve the conditions in which battery hens are kept. Under the proposal, each battery hen would have 800 sq cm of space, instead of the 450 sq cm permitted by the existing European Union directive. The hens would also have more head room and receive a pole on which to perch and a piece of sandpaper on which to scratch their claws. Farmers point out that converting to the larger cages will bring substantial costs, but animal welfare campaigners believe that this is a positive thing, as many egg producers may be encouraged to switch to free-range hens.

A vision of the heart of London without traffic
Article Abstract:
The UK government has announced plans to limit traffic flow through Whitehall and Trafalgar and Parliament Squares in the centre of London, England. A consultation exercise with the general public will be undertaken until the end of Jan 1998, and a definitive plan will then be established. Work on the scheme, which is set to cost between 20 million pounds sterling and 40 million pounds sterling, could start before the end of the 1990s. It seems very likely that the project will go ahead in some form.

The price of turning mud into gold
Article Abstract:
Cardiff Bay Development Corporation wishes to cover the mudflats of Cardiff Bay, Wales, with a freshwater lake to encourage development. A dam costing 150 million pounds sterling will be built across the mouth of the bay. Nature-lovers and environmentalists objected, but Royal assent is expected in Jun 1993. Consulting engineers Sir Alexander Gibb and Partners will design a heavy-duty structure which can resist a 50 ft tidal range. Architects Alsop & Stormer are to beautify the barrage.
