Ayatollah still casts a sinister shadow over Iranian hopes for a new dawn
Article Abstract:
Iranian President Mohamed Khatami is popular among ordinary Iranians, but there are still many reminders in Iran of the harshness of its revolution. The country's clerics, strongly loyal to the late Ayatollah Khomeini, remain influential, and there is still considerable brutality. Khatami faces pressure from his internal opponents, and a shadow is also being cast over his future by the Americans who claimed that they wanted to support him. However, he still has the potential to make Iran one of the most significant peacemakers in the Middle East.

Rafsanjani sings swan song with a human touch
Article Abstract:
The strong support among young people in Iran for the country's new President, Ayatollah Mohammed Khatemi, does not indicate that these voters were protesting against the previous government, according to former President Ali Akbar Rafsanjani. Indeed, the various presidential candidates all emphasized the preservation of the existing system of government. Rafsanjani will be a member of the Council of Expediency, which will advise on government policies. In this position, he will have considerable influence over the new cabinet.

Iran's leader urged to stand up for human rights
Article Abstract:
It is vital that democracy, academic freedom and human rights are secured in Iran, according to Abdol-Karim Soroush, professor of ethics at the Tehran Academy of Philosophy. He believes that the Iranian authorities are not prepared to open up society, allowing people to express their views freely. He feels certain that the enemies of President Mohamed Khatami are planning to use any new outbreak of violence as a way of removing him from power. He is very critical of the power held by conservative clerics in Iran.
