BBC could be worth 7bn pounds sterling in a sell-off
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the public accounts and confidential internal statistics of the BBC, the UK's leading broadcaster, along with interviews with a range of experts, indicates that the organisation could be worth up to 6 billion pounds sterling if privatised and as much as 7 billion pounds sterling if broken up and sold off. This comes at a time when considerable efforts are being made to ensure that the BBC retains its status as a public service corporation. Some observers believe that its future is becoming uncertain as it is no longer able to rely on the licence fee to fund its operations.

Former BBC executives slam 'bloated' institution
Article Abstract:
The BBC is inefficient and unnecessarily large, according to Michael Atwell, Nick Elliott and Tim Gardam, all former BBC executives. They have also highlighted the unusual approaches taken by present BBC senior executives Alan Yentob and Michael Jackson. Their negative comments come at a sensitive time for the BBC, which is undertaking a campaign to increase the licence fee. There have been other areas of tension relating to the BBC at the Edinburgh international television festival.

John Birt: the devil and the BBC
Article Abstract:
There has been extensive criticism of John Birt, director-general of the BBC. He is accused, among other things, of dropping the BBC's role as a public service broadcaster and of diminishing the status of artists. These views overlook that fact that the BBC must change if it is to meet future challenges. Birt believes that the BBC has a strong future as a public service broadcaster, but only if it is willing to adapt to the challenges presented by digital technology.
