Back to the future as Italians reclaim their honour
Article Abstract:
Political corruption in Italy is so widespread that Italians realise that they have unreliable public ethics and no civic conscience. Milan magistrates are investigating private corruption. Civic sense is stronger in the north than the south. Some Italians, including prime minister Giuliano Amato, fear Italy is being divided in two, as on Sep 08, 1943, when the Allies were in the south and the Germans were in the north. However, patriotism is reviving, and some relate the atmosphere to that of Apr 25, 1944, when there was full liberation.

Supergrasses target Andreotti
Article Abstract:
Two Mafia supergrasses, Francesco Marino Mannoia and Tommaso Buscetta, made statements in the US accusing former Italian prime minister Giulio Andreotti of ordering killings of Mafia members Salvatore Lima and Piersanti Mattarella. Lima was an Italian MP, MEP and leader of the Sicilian Christian Democrat party. Mattarella was the president of the Sicilian Christian Democrats. Andreotti denied the allegations. The Italian Senate's immunity commission will vote by Apr 22, 1993 on whether to permit his prosecution.

Andreotti to face trial on Mob links
Article Abstract:
Giulio Andreotti, who has been prime minister of Italy seven times, is to stand trial accused of consorting with the Mafia. This move is regarded as very significant in efforts to break with the country's old political order, destroying Andreotti's image as the symbolic father of Italy. The case will also reveal much detail about the relationship between politicians and organised crime in Italy over recent decades.
