Doctors wait for sign that they have a future
Article Abstract:
Guy's Hospital, London, England has a brand new building and became a trust hopital according to the NHS internal market system adopted in 1990, yet the Tomlinson report of 1992 recommends it merges with St. Thomas's Hospital. Sir Bernard Tomlinson recommends rationalisation of London's medical provision by re-allocating resources from central teaching hospitals to the suburbs and primary care because of the city's reduced population. About 1/4 of the 200 consultants may be made redundant.

Bottomley backs hospitals shake-up
Article Abstract:
Sir Bernard Tomlinson headed an inquiry team which investigated London hospitals. He discovered that they had developed unplanned, resulting in inadequate services for population needs. About 10% of the 1,700 acute beds were not used and technological developments were not taken advantage of. Training and research should be brought together in fewer venues and general practitioner and community health care should be improved.

Bart's battles to honour founder's pledge to poor
Article Abstract:
St Bartholomew's Hospital could be closed as one of the four London teaching hospitals under government review by Sir Bernard Tomlinson in 1992. It was originally founded on the Smithfield, London, England site in 1123 to provide for the poor and sick. In April 1993 it plans to join with Hackney's Homerton Hospital to form a self-governing NHS trust. Loyal staff take pride in the hospital's collective achievements.
