Backlash grows against US race quotas
Article Abstract:
The California Civil Rights Initiative, founded by academics Glynn Custred and Thomas Woods, aims to put pressure on the government to outlaw the use of positive discrimination, which is intended to give greater opportunities to women and minorities. They believe that affirmitive action has damaged the US economy, and that the principles of individual rights, equality of opportunity and advancement by merit should be upheld instead. They are particularly concerned about the impact of affirmitive action on higher education.

Businesses are now realizing that they must adapt if they are to survive, let alone make a profit. However, bureaucracy and corruption make it hard to instigate rapid change.

Pete gets ready for his White House run
Article Abstract:
Pete Wilson was re-elected as governor of California in Nov 1994, despite having been very unpopular previously. He now looks like a serious presidential candidate, and recent speeches seem to have been carefully calculated with the presidential race in mind. He does not have a particularly charismatic personality, but is respected for his political acumen.
