A monster of a player
Article Abstract:
Jazz clarinettist Sidney Bechet attracted considerable controversy, and he remained outside the musical mainstream. He embodied the very spirit and essence of jazz, with his way of life reflecting the free and easy nature of jazz. He had many relationships with women, and travelled widely. He showed great musical talent from an early age, but never learned to read music. There are still many mysteries about his life and very mixed views have been expressed about him.

A Czechered history
Article Abstract:
The history of jazz music in former Czechoslovakia was a very eventful one. Jazz was banned by both the Nazis and the Communists, but there are now many jazz clubs in Prague, Czech Republic. Many jazz musicians in former Czechoslovakia were greatly influenced by music heard on short-wave radio broadcasts from the US during the 1950s. These include Karel Ruzicka, who is appearing at the Riverside Studios in London, England, as part of the 'Made in Prague' programme.

Steely man and weaver of dreams
Article Abstract:
Musician Steely Dan has gained a reputation for paying great attention to detail, an attitude which is seen by fellow musician Don Grolnick as stifling creativity. Grolnick has extensive experience as a session musician, but he really prefers live jazz and has managed to make a number of albums of his own. He still does some session work, but is now moving in other directions, including Latin music.
