Banished but unbowed
Article Abstract:
Good things can come out of apparent catastrophe, according to cellist and conductor Mstislav Rostropovich. He was contemplating committing suicide when he was expelled from Russia in 1974, for example, but in fact living in the West has led to him growing greatly as a musician, as he has been able to work with the best orchestras. He now feels that his optimistic approach to life has been justified. He has been particularly influenced by Shostakovich, to whom he remained loyal when he was dismissed from the Conservatoire.

Pulling strings
Article Abstract:
Ralph Kirshbaum organised the first Manchester International Cello Festival in Apr 1988 and it has become a biennial occasion for celebrating the cello and its music. It also honours the memory of Pierre Fournier with an award and creates a meeting place for players and teachers. Instrument making is also represented. Rivalry and competitiveness are given a low profile. In 1992 the event's first commissioned work, Tristan Keuris's 'Double Concerto,' debuts in the Royal Northern College of Music.

An honourable homecoming - at last
Article Abstract:
The authorities in Hungary have been keen to honour conductor Sir Georg Solti following his death. He fled Hungary in Aug 1939, and only made his first recording in Hungary with Hungarian artists very shortly before his death. A plaque has now been dedicated at his birthplace, and a formal ceremony has been held at the Liszt Academy in Budapest, Hungary, where Solti studied. His ashes have been placed beside those of fellow exile Bela Bartok at the Farkasreti Cemetery.
