Battle to save gypsies from the forces of law and order

Article Abstract:

The Legal Defense Bureau for National and Ethnic Minorities (Neku) is a Hungarian civil rights office which provides help for gypsies, or Roma. Roma face institutionalized prejudice, especially from the police. The Roma are used as scapegoats for Hungarians who have seen a drop in their living standards. Roma number between 500,000 and 800,000 from a total population of 10 million in Hungary, and their unemployment rate is close to 90% in some areas. They had secure housing and work under communism, but face a hostile environment in which they have to find their own houses and jobs after communism collapsed.

Why this village loves its festival

Article Abstract:

The annual music festival in Cropredy, England, which has been running since 1976, has a relaxed, calm atmosphere. There is almost no crime associated with this event, and it therefore requires only very limited police involvement. The 1997 festival attracted 23,000 people, with strong involvement by local people. The event is closely connected with the folk rock group Fairport Convention, which sparked the festival off when it organized a sing-along to raise money for a new village hall.

The day the gypsies rode into town

Article Abstract:

Many gypsies from the UK, Ireland and continental Europe gather at the annual horse fair in Appleby, England. This event plays a key role in gypsy culture, as well as being a place to meet relatives and trade horses. A great deal of money changes hands, and many gypsies rely heavily on this money to see them through the following winter. It is believed that the fair dates from 1685, but some people claim that horses have been traded in the town since the 13th century.
