Bayreuth: How very Wagnerian
Article Abstract:
The annual Richard Wagner festival in Bayreuth, Germany, has been attracting growing controversy over recent years. There have been no new productions since 1996, and it is already known that the production team for the new 'Lohengrin' scheduled for 1999 has withdrawn. Tension has arisen over the question of who will succeed Wolfgang Wagner, the grandson of Richard Wagner, who runs the festival, especially as he has rejected his son, Gottfried. Wolfgang Wagner disapproves of most of what takes place on progressive opera stages, and this makes real reform impossible.
