Bent backwards without support
Article Abstract:
The Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) has examined a sample of 401 charites representing a nationwide cross section and has found that two thirds have less money available in 1993 than they did a year earlier. Those in the south and Midlands are particularly affected by increasing demands for their services. The London Marriage Guidance Council (LMGC) has seen demands for councilling increase by 20% from 1991 to 1993, and there are 1,000 people on the waiting list, but funds are very difficult to come by. LMGC gets 80% of its money from clients but these are becoming more and more short of money.

Advertising a case for help
Article Abstract:
Benevolent societies connected with professions or industry, which help their member financially, are receiving about five times more requests for help than in 1987, particularly from younger people who have been made redundant. They can advise on DSS regulations and offer grants to help with large household expenses. The National Advertising Benevolent Society set up a Job Club and is considering limiting its help to people with families and the elderly. Payroll giving is a possibility.

When caring means sharing ..
Article Abstract:
Small charities received lower donations in 1991/2 but larger ones have had a 6% increase. Charity trustees must spend funds according to the association's aims, but helping smaller charities in the same field would be acceptable. The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association received unexpected legacies and has since planned to direct 10% of its funds to related agencies. The Royal National Lifeboat Institution offers its expertise to other life saving charities.
