Berbers keep their distance from the FIS
Article Abstract:
The Berbers in the mountainous regions of Algeria, although Muslims, reject the fundamentalism of the Front Islamique du Salut (FIS), but are concerned about democracy in the recent elections. In the town of Tizi Ouzon, no FIS candidate won seats in the general election, even after the FIS had marched through the town pronouncing that they would Islamicise the area. However the Berbers are concerned about the government's cancellation of the second round of elections after the FIS won the first round.

Algeria's war of myths
Article Abstract:
The Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) won in the 1992 Algerian general election but it has been unable to take because of the resignation of President Chadi Bendjedid. The Algerian constitution is written so that the power remains with the presidentially-appointed government ministers. With no president, the army continues to control Algeria as it has since the National Liberation Front (FLN) helped oust the French in 1962.
