Birmingham's first lady of art
Article Abstract:
Liz Ann Macgregor, director of the Ikon Gallery in Birmingham, England, is very keen to involve ordinary people with contemporary art. The gallery, which is shortly to reopen in a converted Victorian brick schoolhouse, is in an area of the city which has become very fashionable. The ground floor of the gallery is occupied by a cafe, and Macgregor believes that this will attract people to make the journey upstairs by glass staircase or glass lift. She takes an individual approach to exhibitions, often ignoring the latest fashionable works.

Revising maritime history
Article Abstract:
The new National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, London, England, offers a significant revision of traditional views on the UK's maritime history and heroes. Considerable efforts have been made to shift away from the sea as the centre of every aspect of national life, as it was when the museum opened in 1937, and to ensure that a new generation is made aware of the importance of the sea. Lord Nelson still has his own gallery, but questions are raised about whether his reputation was based merely on propaganda.

Concert plans trouble Courtauld's peace
Article Abstract:
Plans to construct a concert hall in the 18th century courtyard of the Courtauld Institute Galleries in London, England, are likely to attract considerable controversy. Some observers feel that a concert hall could be a cause of distraction to art historians studying at the Courtauld Institute itself. Redevelopment work at the site also includes a building currently used by the family courts. Once this building is vacated, it has the potential to become an extension for the Courtauld Institute Galleries.
