Edinburgh's invasion of the sugar castles
Article Abstract:
A Post-Modern hotel and battlement-style offices planned at the foot of Calton Hill, Edinburgh, Scotland will spoil the historic environment. The symbolic site houses the National Monument of 12 Doric columns, intended to recreate the Parthenon in the 1820's, but never completed. This folly is known as 'Edinburgh's Disgrace.' The Modernist St Andrew's House, which accomodates the Scottish Office on the other side of the hill, blends well with the city. It was built in the 1940's with simple Edinburgh granite.

Castles in the sky
Article Abstract:
Nicholas Hawksmoor, Wren and Edwin Lutyens each produced magnificent designs for buildings which where never constructed. It is worth considering using Millennium funds to ensure that these buildings can finally been seen in all their glory by the general public. Hawksmoor designed a Baptistery for the west front of St Paul's Cathedral, while Lutyens designed a Catholic cathedral for Liverpool, England. Wren's original 'Greek Cross' design for St Paul's Cathedral was never built.

Masterpieces in the mind's eye
Article Abstract:
Readers of the Independent newspaper have made many suggestions about how National Lottery funding could be used to mark the Millennium by constructing buildings of high architectural merit which were planned but never actually built. These include Zaha Hadid's Cardiff Bay Opera House, Foster Associates' design for the rebuilding of Hammersmith Broadway and Lutyens' design for Liverpool cathedral. It would be very worthwhile to mark the Millennium in this way.
