Black Christmas for Blair as Mandelson and Robinson quit
Article Abstract:
UK Prime Minister Tony Blair faces significant challenges as a result of the resignations of Trade and Industry Secretary Peter Mandelson and Paymaster General Geoffrey Robinson. The resignations follow the disclosure that Mandelson accepted a 373,000 pounds sterling personal loan from Robinson to purchase a house. Mandelson's departure is a particular blow to Blair, as he is one of the driving forces behind New Labour. Robinson had planned to resign in early 1999 in any case, as there had already been negative reports about his business affairs.
