Blackpool, the town that's too old Labour for New Labour
Article Abstract:
The UK Labour party is to hold its 1998 annual conference in Blackpool, England, but will then probably not hold its conference in Blackpool again, even though it has had close links with the town since 1927. It will hold its 2000 conference in Bournemouth, England, and its 2001 conference in Brighton, England, a decision which has angered some traditional Labour MPs, who feel that the south coast of England has too many associations with the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats. It is unlikely that the Labour party will return to Blackpool unless the town's image improves.

The Bishop of Gnome
Article Abstract:
The UK government seems to wish to exert a significant degree of control, according to Private Eye editor Ian Hislop. He feels that Prime Minister Tony Blair does not believe that there is any need for oppositional politics any more. He believes that young people are interested in the same things as older people. He does not deliberately seek to attract young readers for Private Eye, but many young people do buy the magazine because they are interested in how the UK operates.
