President Blair trumps Brown on welfare
Article Abstract:
There seems to be an element of conflict between UK Prime Minister Tony Blair and Chancellor Gordon Brown over who is the real driving force behind welfare reform. Blair is chairing a new Cabinet committee on welfare reform, and some observers believe that he will use this as an opportunity to reassert his authority over Brown. Tension has been increased by reports indicating that Brown may be considering taxing child benefit and removing this benefit from those aged between 16 and 18 in full-time education.

Blair is on a mission. Driven by Thatcherite zeal. And the sick and disabled are next on the list
Article Abstract:
UK Prime Minister Tony Blair seems determined to go ahead with wide-reaching reforms to the welfare system, despite opposition from a growing number of Labour MPs. He has not been deterred by a split in the party over cutting benefits for single parents, and believes that his tough stance will eventually be proved justified. It is expected that Blair will implement a cut in industrial injuries benefit, and there are growing concerns about the future of disability benefits.
