Six fashionable cliches about new Labour
Article Abstract:
There were a number of assumptions that were widely made in the UK about the Labour party before it won the general election. It was claimed that Tony Blair was too young to be Prime Minister, and that the Labour party did not have enough people of very high calibre to become government ministers. It was also assumed that the Labour party would revert to type once it gained power. Since the general election, there have been other widely-used cliches. It has been claimed that the Blair government lacks substance and that it differs very little from the previous Conservative administration.

Why Tony Blair will have to reform our voting system
Article Abstract:
The UK Liberal Democrats have gained substantial benefits from establishing a loose alliance with the Labour party. However, it will be difficult for Liberal Democrat leader Paddy Ashdown to retain his position unless the party also succeeds in its demands for a more proportional system for electing the House of Commons. Prime Minister Tony Blair still has very mixed views about proportional representation. However, Ashdown believes that Blair will eventually support the electoral reforms set to be recommended by Lord Jenkins.

Major's secret weapon, made in Ulster
Article Abstract:
The fate of the present Conservative government in the UK may well be determined by the Northern Irish MPs, particularly the nine Ulster Unionists. The government has a majority of only one, so it is vital that it retains the support of the Ulster Unionists. This places David Trimble, the leader of the Ulster Unionists, in a very strong position. It is likely that he will prefer to keep a weak Conservative government in power, rather than deal with a strong Labour government.
