Blair's winning plan: keep it simple
Article Abstract:
The Labour party has announced that it will undertake an extensive consultation exercise before it drafts its election manifesto. This draft will then be submitted to a ballot of all party members. This is not really as radical an approach as it may at first appear. The draft will be issued only shortly before the election, so is unlikely to be extensively amended by party members. However, it will play a significant role in ensuring that party members do not have unrealistic expectations about what a future Labour government could achieve.

A clear message from the margins
Article Abstract:
Both the Labour and Conservative parties have had to deal recently with incidents in which people on the fringes of the party have expressed views which clash with those of the leaders. These views tend to be uncomfortable truths which can only be rejected by the leaders, who have to be much more cautious, especially in a pre-election period. Some observers believe that those on the fringes of the parties should be given particular attention, as they may reflect the views of others within the party.

Must Major drown in dirty blue water?
Article Abstract:
The recent defection of Conservative MP Alan Howarth to the Labour party and the death of former Conservative prime minister Alec Douglas-Home have highlighted very significant issues which are now facing the party. Reviewing the career of Alec Douglas-Home shows how far removed the party has become from the past, while the defection of Alan Howarth has presented the party with a moral challenge. It must now battle to overcome the image of harshness which has been created by Howarth's accusations.
