Rose wilted out in the wilderness
Article Abstract:
There are very mixed views about the impact of the 1987 general election on the recent history of the UK Labour party. Some observers believe that the outcome of the election as satisfying, given that there was a danger that the party could have come third after the Liberal-SDP Alliance. Others believe that the election defeat was a disaster, the result of promotional activity being given precedence over real policies. It is uncertain whether John Smith, who took over the party leadership after the election defeat, would have been able to reposition the party at the centre of British politics.

Just another politician after all?
Article Abstract:
UK Labour party leader Tony Blair appeared to make a very strong start in directing the party. However, issues have now arisen which have detracted slightly from his extremely confident image, and there are indications about the potential weaknesses of a future Labour government. He has misjudged the mood of the Labour party on some matters, and his claims to be speaking a new political language now seem to be unfounded.
