Blame it on the Bossa Nova
Article Abstract:
There has been a strong revival in interest in Brazilian music in the UK, partly as a result of the acid jazz movement of the early 1990s, when jazz-based Latin and Brazilian music would be played with 1970s funk, soul and jazz. Brazilian music is widely admired for its great richness, which comes from a mixture of Portuguese, African and indigenous Indian styles. It involves many different percussion instruments, but also makes extensive use of the acoustic guitar. It has come under many different pressures, but these have sometimes served to make it even more dynamic.

Talent, addiction and all that jazz
Article Abstract:
The image of trumpet player Chet Baker, who died in May 1988, cannot be separated from his music. His songs, particularly his ballads, gave an insight into the sadness of being unable to return to the romance and innocence of youth. The tragedy of his life became more visible as he grew older. He became known for a reflective, understated sound which was partly inspired by Miles Davis' performance on the album 'The Birth Of The Cool.' The quality of his musical output became less consistent in the 1960s, but the myth surrounding him expanded.

It really is Bob, having a wail of a time
Article Abstract:
Many fans of Bob Marley tend to overlook the music he performed and recorded before the release of 'Catch A Fire' in 1972. In fact, much of his 1970s music contains elements of songs dating from the 1960s, and there are many interesting aspects to his early musical career. He first came to public attention with the ska song 'Simmer Down,' which sold 70,000 copies and reached number one in Jan 1964. This was the first of 20 hit singles by Bob Marley and The Wailers for Clement Dodd's Studio One.
