Black in the USA ... sweet and baad
Article Abstract:
The 1971 film 'Sweet Sweetback's Baadassss Song,' directed by Melvin Van Peebles, had a very significant impact on the black film genre. It sparked off more than 200 black action films in the period to 1975, and marked the beginning of a great outpouring of emotions that had previously been kept hidden. It was technically pioneering, especially in the use of superimposed images, and was financially very successful. The films that followed are sometimes morally ambivalent, often showing pimps and drug dealers.
