Blending the traditional and the trivial
Article Abstract:
The Pearson group has over 100 family members owning over 300 million pounds sterling of the company's shares but profits have fallen in 1991 and 1992. Head office is at Millbank Tower and interests range from Royal Doulton china and the Financial Times to Alton Towers. Samuel Pearson established the company in 1844 as a small building firm in West Yorkshire and his grandson, Weetman, took the firm to London in 1882 and built it into a world-wide business. Weetman was knighted in 1894 and created Viscount Cowdray in 1917. Under the third Lord Cowdray the company went public. Lord Blakenham, 54, the present chairman, plans to reduce peripheral businesses and reorganise the main interests, but family influence may decline.
