Blowin' in the supersonic wind
Article Abstract:
Enormous storms on the Sun can have a considerable impact on events on Earth, as they send streams of electrically charged particles. Scientists now hope that six spacecraft to be launched later in 1995 will allow information to be gathered about the causes of these storms and allow future storms to predicted more accurately. Two satellites have already been launched as part of the International Solar-Terrestrial Physics (ISTP) programme, and these will measure the stream of charged particles from the Sun.

Nasa takes a nosedive
Article Abstract:
US space agency Nasa is currently facing a number of serious problems, including low staff morale, a falling workforce and a reduced budget. This has prompted the decision to privatise the shuttle programme, with shuttle operations being transferred to United Space Alliance, formed by Rockwell International and Lockheed Martin. Some observers are expressing opposition to privatisation, especially as the new shuttle operators may be obliged to cut costs in order to meet launch targets.

Giotto's suicide mission
Article Abstract:
Giotto, the first European spacecraft to be sent into deep space and the first to ue Earth's gravity to alter orbit, will visit its second comet in six years in Jul 1992. Its target is Comet Grigg-Skejellerup which orbits the Sun in the same direction as the planets. The 70m diameter antennae of the American Deep Space Network telescope contacted Giotto from nearly 140 million miles away. Giotto will provide information on the nature of the solar wind and the dust in the coma.
