Going in style
Article Abstract:
Standards of design for toilets installed in public buildings in the UK over recent decades have generally been very poor. In many cases, architects use innovative and high quality features for the main building, but in the toilets simply install the cheapest and least attractive fittings. However, some architects, such as Richard Rogers, Norman Foster and Philipe Starck, do give more attention to the design of toilets. Swiss architect Jacques Herzog is also keen to use high quality materials in his design for the toilets at the new Tate at Bankside power station in London, England.

The diplomatic art of going native
Article Abstract:
The new British Council headquarters in Prague was designed by the British architects Jestico and Whiles in collaboration with several Czechoslovakian contractors and craftsmen. A high standard of finish despite a low budget was achieved by using individuals. A glass floor and ceiling make a light, modern reception area above a large English language teaching resource centre. The British Council, which promotes Anglo-Czechoslovak relations, is a secure point in a changing Prague.

Article Abstract:
Vaclav Havel, president of the Czech Republic, is very concerned that Prague should be protected from inappropriate new buildings. He is not opposed to new construction altogether, but believes that developments such as modern shopping malls and office blocks could swamp the city's beauty. He must act quickly if Prague is to be saved, as foreign investors have already established a strong presence on the outskirts of the city.
