Bodies spill on to tracks as Hutus die in crush on train to freedom
Article Abstract:
A train carrying Rwandan Hutu refugees from camps in Zaire on the 25-mile journey to Kisangani, Zaire was badly overcrowded and this resulted in the death of more than 100 people, mainly children, the weak and those who were very ill. The tragedy was not apparent to journalists and aid workers who were also travelling on the train until it reached the station, when bodies began spilling out onto the tracks. Aid agencies have called on the rebel authorities in Zaire to permit greater cooperation between aid concerns and the local administration.

High drama played out in home of the Bard
Article Abstract:
The decision by Conservative MP Alan Howarth to defect to the Labour party has caused great controversy. His local Conservative Association has expressed regret that he did not discuss the decision before making an announcement through a Sunday newspaper, and many observers have expressed surprise, as he had until recently been a strong supporter of prime minister John Major. Some local people feel that he should not be allowed to operate as a Labour MP for a largely Conservative seat.

Bright future on the horizon for Greenwich
Article Abstract:
The Greenwich area of London is rich in history, and its seven-mile river front used to be one of the busiest stretches of the Thames. However, it now suffers from high unemployment and poverty levels. The local council and the Greenwich Waterfront Development Partnership hope that these problems can be overcome with ambitious long-term plans to revive the area. These include new homes, commercial and office developments and a cross-borough tram network.
